Carbon monoxide poisoning in the back of a pickup?
How dangerous is carbon monoxide in the back of a pickup, particularly if you have a camper shell? Can this be addressed by opening a window back there? How about if there is no camper shell, is it still dangerous? How does it get in there in the first place?
Carbon monoxide is part of the normal exhaust fumes from the car. It is odourless, colourless and dangerous. It preferentially binds to haemoglobin in your blood and displaces oxygen from doing the same, meaning that oxygen is not available to go around your body. Keep this up long enough and you’ll have a cardiac arrest.
Ventilation and air flow is the trick. Most camper shells aren’t exactly airtight, but opening a window at the least is a good start. If there’s no shell you shouldn’t have any trouble.
